Haiti Trip 2020

A different sort of trip, but familiar.

Construction Team trip with the main purpose of hooking the clinic up to the township electrical grid, and to make improvements and alterations to the solor power/battery/generator systems.

Jon did a great job sorting out 15 years of scabbed electrical systems! Rob (Wobb), Jason, Matt (our short term leader!), Francis (Jon's son), and Rafael were in attendance. The two fellows, Kyra and Logan were fantastic and very helpful. Baby tarantula on my Haiti tools....

Haiti Trip 2019

Lots of team building!

Dr. Randall's custom designed handle, my team for the week, helping me create all sorts of needed items, and fresh coconut with rum filled insides for everyone.

Haiti 2018 Round 2

The Surgical Trip.

The trip in late February/early March, and more friends made. 17 people this time. Fully loaded with checked 34 bags plus carry-ons.

Reminder...always bring something for the cook! Can openers, matches, knives, and the like!

Getting in the groove

The Surgical Trip.

Yoga at 6:30am. Doctor Penna, a certified Yoga instructor, created breathing and stretching practices whereby we didnt need to get on the ground...aka get on the moldy concrete rooftop. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets from this place.

Doctor Randall working the pediatrics wing while the gals do their thing and set up the OR in record time.

Random shots

The Surgical Trip.

Alway sneeking into the kitchen in the mid-day to see what the cook is brewing today. I love the fresh smells from the pots as things simmer.

Many road trips into the town for supplies. Doctor Mercier gave me his truck to use...yes, I was driving in Haiti...everyone but me was scared.

Take time to appreciate the storm coming.

Annie

The Surgical Trip.

Took my sisters kid, Annie, along. I was so very impressed with her attitude and direction. It actually makes me a bit hopeful about the next generation! If you are over 40, you know what I mean....such energy and enthusiasm.

She was a delight. Took her to town, she went to the orphanage, market, rode on the back of a moto in Tomassique.....the boy driving fell in love with her....

Docs being docs

The Surgical Trip.

Not sure of Doctor Chung's fashion statement here....but I am not one to judge.

Avery weighing malnourished kids. What you can't see is that the scale is tied to a whimpy tree limb that flexes badly! Sort of like a carnival ride.

My OR Nurse hero, Rebecca, who can weild a hand tool with the best of them. She fixes a lot of stuff in Haiti.

Images

The Surgical Trip.

Random pictures. The lady who does the laundry, napping on a 5 gallon bucket. A child with an angelic face who was given a teddy bear by one of the nurses. Madame Jaqueline, the lady who sells Haitian tourist crap out front every year, and who I always feel compelled to buy from. She is my favorite.
HAITI 2018

Start of the Wall Cabinet Project

This area is for surgical supply storage. I have a few images and a few videos showing us fabricating the storage cabinet area. Please take a look at this page, along with the Blog Posts and Videos. Thanks for the interest.

EXTRAPOLATION.....
and other foreign concepts

There are 8 Haitians in this photo running one screw into the frame......lots of little helpers I have found along the way. polation to a group of Haitian kids through a translator.

I have no idea what I am doing here, but I liked the photo of Rob and me.Must be a case of me giving Rob the old Chisel-Chisel!!More on that here .

Power Tools in Haiti
Me-oh-my.
I'm always forgetting how long I have been doing this, and how most Haitians have never even seen a power tool at work. Tragically ironic what happens.

Plywood going down. First the floors and fixed shelves, then the tops, and finally the doors.

My Master Craftsman in Training
Working one-on-one.
Just watch Rhilson work. He is 14. Look at how steady and sure he is with his movements. He is doing a three-handed job with two hands. With the right motivation and opportunities, he will be a Master Craftsman.
Getting it done...team effort finally in play!

Better than some, worse that most, but done...almost.

The nearly finished cases.

We will be adding upper doors on the next trip.
